During the 1930’s, the National Park Service (NPS) sureyed the recreational value of shorelines across the United States and recommended that 12 be protected; only one received designation, however, Cape Hatteras in 1937. No other seashores or lake shores would be join the National Park System until 1961 with Cape Cod.
